Mario first appeared on the video game scene in 1981 in Japan in the now classic arcade game Donkey Kong and what most people don't know is that he was not originally named Mario, his name was Jumpman and he was a carpenter not a plumber. While the game was being localized for American audiences, Nintendo's warehouse landlord Mario Segale confronted Nintendo's Minoru Arakawa, demanding to be paid back rent. After heated negotiations Mario Segale was paid and Nintendo chose to rename their lovable character after him. Mario's profession as a carpenter was originally intended to reflect that the character was a hard worker and help make it easier for gamers to identify with Mario as a character. After a colleague had suggested that Mario resembled a plumber, Miyamoto changed Mario's profession accordingly and developed Mario Brothers featuring the character in the sewers of New York City. That is how Mario was transformed into what he is today, one of the world's most popular arcade game characters and Nintendo's mascot. We hope that you enjoy playing all the great free Mario games we have brought you here for your entertainment.
